STAR OF CANADA.

SALVAGE OPEEATIONB GOING ON. [BT TBLBOBAPH— V&OBS ASSOCIATION.] GISBOBNE, 27th June. Salvage operations proceeded briskly yesterday, and last evening four pumps were put 'into trial operation for an hour. The water in the holds was re duced considerably, and the chip raised herself noticeably, though, of course, the falling tide has to be taken into account. The heavy ground swell yesterday was responsible for a very perceptible motion on the ship. GISBORNE, This Day. Trial pumping is proceeding aboard the Star of Canada. Great volumes of water are flowing from the scuppers. The diver who inspected the hull from the outside yesterday found that the forepart of the vessel had worked fully eight feet into the papa, where it rested as in a cradle. He was unable to approach closely, owing to the vessel's movements, and the light was bad, but he could find no structural damage. The rise and fall of the tide inside the vessel yesterday was three feet, its against six feet outside. PUMPING TEST SATISFACTORY. GISBORNE, This Day. Captain Hart stated that the pumping test in every way proved satisfactory. Forty minutes' pumping la6t night reduced the water in No. 2 hold 2ft, and in No. 1 by 2ft 9in. One hour's pumping to-day leduoed the water 4ft, and the second hour proved that the pumps were more than able to keep the water down. The Terawhiti's pumps have not been used, that vessel being engaged in laying anchors. Captain Hart etated that as far as the diver could ascertain, the vessel ia perfectly sound structurally. In the engineroom an angle plate between the frame and tank had started, but the damage was not of serious consequence. There was no sign of a leak in the engine and boiler room, these departments remaining quite dry; in fact, if the ship was cut on at the bow the after part would float off intact. A rumour that the machinery was displaced was unfounded.
