VICEREGAL. At Government House last evening, . a lecture on the subject of "Alpine Climbing" was given by Mr. M. Ross." A large number of ladies and gentlemen received invitations to be present. Mr. R. Mothes has been re-elected chairman of the Petone Fire Board. Mr. A. S. M'Shane, of Wellington, will' leave for a trip to Sydney thie afternoon. Commissioner Richards, of the Salvation is gazetted an officiating minister within the meaning of the Marriage Act. Appointment* of Messrs. Thos. RPointon and Henry M'Murray as gaolers of Lyttelton and Dunedin prisons respectively are gazetted. Councillors Atkinson and Hindmarsh, ■with, the Mayor,- were last night appointed the City Council's delegates to the Municipal Conference. Sir Joshua Williams arrived from Dunedin to-day, and Mr. Justice Denniston comes on Sunday. Mr. Justice Sim leaves for the south this evening. At a meeting of the Dunedin Hospital Board last night, Miss Margaret Myles was appointed Matron or tie Dunedin Hospital. Miss Myles came to the Dominion from England in March. Bishop Grimes was congratulated by a great gathering of citizens at Christchurch on Wednesday night on the completion of twenty-five years as a Bishop, and presented with a cheque for a thousand guineas. The Bishop, in reply, said he would devote the money to the Cathedral. Mr. C. Spencer Tewsley, second son of Mr. H. Tewsley of Wellington, has been appointed to the position of junior engineer on the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Paparoa. ?rior to his departure for fhe south to join the vessel, Mr. Tewsley was presented with a case of pipes by his friends. Mr. T. N. Broderick, the new Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Wellington district, presided at yesterday's meeting of the Land Board for the first time, and received a cordial welcome. Mr. J. Daweon referred to Mr. Broderick's -excellent record in. other parts- of New Zealand, and assured him of the support of the members, in carrying out his important duties. At the City Council, meeting last evening Councillor Smith, as a sequel to the presentation made to him recently handed a large framed portrait of hmißfli-f to the council. The Mayor, in thanking .Councillor Smith for this permanent record of one who had been many years a city councillor, said the eulogistic references at the recent presentation to Councillor Smith* had been well merited. Councillor Cohen said he had known Councillor Smith for over forty years. He had rowed in tho early seventies in the boat of which Councillor Smith was coxswain. The portrait' was accepted with applause.
