Before the Cost of Living Commission Charles Thomas Munro, fruiterer, eeid there was only a fair margin between the price charged for fruit to the oonßUtner and the price paid to the producer, sometimes not enough from the retailers' point of T_iew. There were no rings among the retailers either in the matter of buying cheap or soiling dear. Very often the auctioneers were buyers and sellers as well as merely salesmen, acting as a medium between the producer and retailer. With few exceptions growers were unediicated\_sufficiontly in the matter of grading their produce. William Darcy Mason, farmer* said there were some big grocers in Dunedin who ran a system of barter with farmers. Grocers supplied the_ country people with groceries and took in exchange such articles as eggs, butter, aad dead pigs. Farmers had no say in the values allowed by the grocers for their produce.
