KARORI TRAM ROUTE

The Northland District Municipal Electors' Afisociationi wrote to the candidates for the Mayoralty, asking them, ia view of the "urgekfc need for shortening the tramway route, city to KaTori," what their views were on the suggested Hill-street or Sydney-street connection, and what they "proposed to do in the matter." Mr. R. A. Wright replied that, if elected, he would thoroughly enquire into the various proposals and be guided by the evidence submitted. Mr. A. S. Biss replied at some length. He said he had always advocated t\ shorter route, that he had protested against the present route when it was proposed, but that he could not give a definite answer on ihe Hill-street or Syd-ney-street proposal till he had the Engineer's report*. Subject to this reservation, he was inclined to think that "a direct route, via Kelburne, through a tunnel into Church-street and down Boulcott-street, would be the hgst." Mr. J. Smith Teplied that he was "decidedly m .f avour of something being done as soon as possible," but he could not give a definite reply to the questions put until the Engineer's reports had been read. M f . M'Laren's answer is to the following _ effect : — "On the question of shortening the tramway route from the city to Jiarori, I have favoured the laying down of a branch line through Hillstreet. A work of this nature will have to be done out of a loan ; and -with respect to the best route, I would be guided to some extent by the advice of our experts ; but I am ia favour of shortening tho route as early) as means will allow."
