SHEARERS AND DEFENCE.
At the Shearers' Conference yesterday, the following iraolution was carried' with two dissentients: — "That this conference of sheaj^ers declare that the socalldd New Zealand Defence Act is not truly such; that it is not in the interests of peace, but tends towards instilling into the minds of the young men of this Dominion ideas of militarism which have become a burden on the workers of European countries ; and, while believing in effective defence, we call upon the Government to repeal the compulsory clauses of the Defence Act; and we further believe that effective defence of this Dominion lies in a scheme of naval defence .with the Australian Commonwealth.
