PERSONAL MATTERS.
Mr. Mark Caselberg left Wellington for England yesterday. Professor Mills will leave shortly for the United States to take part in the Presidential election campaign. Messrs. Alfred Lindsay, George Petherick, and W. J. Helyer have been re-elected trustees of the Home for the Aged Needy. Major-General Godley, who is at present in Dunedin, will visit ' the Territorial camp at Wyndham next Monday. He is due back in Wellington to-morrovf week. At Messrs. Kempthorne, Prosser and Co.'s warehouse last evening, Mr. John Sinclair, -who is leaving the local branch of the firm after fourteen years' service, was presented by the manager, on behalf of the members of the staff, with a gold watch suitably inscribed. Dr. J. C. Simpson, one of the Antarctic meteorologists with Captain Scott's expedition, passed through Wellington yesterday on his way to India, whither he has been recalled through the illness of Dr. Walker, chief of the Meteorological Department of India. Dr. Simpson is a celebrated physicist, and has made some discoveries in the new field in the South. ' Mr. Frederick John. Pownall, Wellington agent for the Yorkshire Insurance Company^ and the Canterbury' Farmers' Insurance Company, died last night at the aged of 45. He had sustained bloodpoisoning in the head, and succumbed after a week's illness. His brother, Mr. C -A. Pownall, solicitor, Masterton, predeceased him by only a couple of months. Deceased was the second son. of the late Mr. C. J. Pownall, of Karaka Bay. His sisters.are Mrs.. Chae. Richardson and Mrs. Oscar Kember, and his brothers,! Messrs., Win . Arthur, and Robert Pownall. Deceased; was the first person to take up a residential section at Karaka Bay, which place he had frequently visited as a member of the Star Boating Club. From 1889 to 1891 Mr. Pownall was a prominent Rugby representative, a member of the Star Club's senior '..fours, and a member of the. Wellington Amateur Athletic Club. Deceased was very popular, and will be greatly missed.
