THE UNITY SCHEME.
10 IHB EDITOR. Shy—A copy of tho "Unity Schem*,'* addressed to "the ÜBeful people of New ( Zealand," was placed in my hands come time ago. I have studied it very carefully, and find that I cannot hupporl the proposals, for these reasons: — 1. Because tho cscheme i» founded on the asBumption that ©very member of a union is a (supporter of tno Labour party. 2. It is for syndicalism*— " If a strike is found to be the only, remedy, then it is. not only authorised, but the, whole power of tho workers of the whole of the Dominion will be at its back." 3. "To organise and arrange a press bureau, to publish and prepare a. weekly newspaper." asking tho union to guaranteea probable expenditure of £30,000. A., " Group to be a branch of the Labour party." ( 5. " One delegate for each Dominion ■ organisation in each affiliated group." A group is made up of a> number of unions, such as carpenters and joiners, masons and bricklayers, painters and plumbers, and other branches of the building trade. A bricklayer, a. man with an iron jaw, may be appointed delegate for the group. He knows little or nothing about the technicalities of tho other trades. He cannot understand the aims and aspirations of, say, (he paperhangers ; but ho w the delegate for the 'lot, and hie vote may drag tho whole group into a eyndical strike. Under the preference clause in force in most of the unions, men are obliged to join tho union. If the Unity scheme is adopted, men who are Liberals, or of no party at all, will b» forced through tho action of this union to contribute to and support the Labour party, which seeks to "unite 60,000 workers, for tho purpose of fighting 140,000 workers who are not, and are never likely to be, associated with any union. This has not for i\> main object justice for all.-— I am, etc.), TRUE UNITST. ' .Wellington, 10th April.
