PROFESSOR HASLAM RESIGNS

"Ha^rr^ w ho kas occupied the* Chair of Classics at the Can- : terbury College for thirty-two years, forwarded his. resignation to the Board of Governors of the College yesterday. Professor Wa.sl.iTn has been in poor health for com© lime. It is understood that he finds it impossible to continue his work at- the college and has, therefore, sent in Ms resignation. Professor Haslam is a native of Ceylon, but- he was educated in England, and received his scholastic training in that country. He attended Rugby, whet© he became head of the school and obtained au Exhibition. On going to St. John's College, Cambridge, he won an Open Exhibition and foundation Scholarship and graduated as 8.A., with a First Class in the Classical Tripos in 1371. He was appointed composition muster at Tunbridge School, and later on head of the Classical Department in the "United ; Service College, Westward Ho. When it was decided to establish, a Chair of Classics, at Canterbury College he was selected for the position. At the end of 1879 he arrived, .in Christchurch to take up hi« duties early in. 1880. During'his long term of service many pupils have pas&ed through his hands 'andu number of them haye 1 distinguished themselves in other countries. Profeseor Hatlaxn has always been very enthusiastic ia his work. Evidence of this ,
is shown by the fact that when b© went to the Old Country on leave a few years ago he succeeded in obtaining a scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, available only to students of Canterbury College.
