The men, a portion of the North Canterbury TtMH-aHfip, went into camp last week, and were marched back to the city yesterday. They had done their work well* said the officer commanding (Lieutenant-Colonel Smith), and had made a first rate beginning. The degree of efficiency already attained -was quite suprismg. There can. be not the- least doubt that the' men enjoyed their experience, and they arrived | in the city looking brown and hearty, I though a few of ihem were obviously footsore after a quick inarch over hard ! roade to the nius-ic of a pipe band. A I yeang man who went to the camp under protest told a Lyttelton Times reporter thai he had enjoyed himself. He etiU. believed that- military service should xkH be compulsory, but he did not mind admitting thati he had encountered none of the evils that had been, predicted.
