OEEICERS' PAY.
MERCHANT SERViCE GUILD. ARBITRATION COURT AWARD. INCREASES MUST BE PASSED ON . TO THE PUBLIC. ' Bj Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received April 11, 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Federal Arbitration Court award in the case o! th& Merchant Service Guild against the steamship owners provides for an all round increase in the wages of captains and officers on InterState passenger and cargo vessels, an eight hour day, overtime payment, increased holidays, and one month's notice or pay after three months' service when' officers' articles are expiring. The president reserved for further con- I adoration 1 the question of whether the award shall apply to, or to what extent, the boats of the Union S.S. Company, Euddart Parker Company, and a. number of other companies trading outside Australia. The award hafi a proposed currency of five years, operating from let May. The Guild expresses satisfaction with the award. Shipowners in Sydney question the power of the court to deal with. ve«6els trading within, one State only, and predict that the increased cost involved will be disastrous to the shipping trade, which, will be driven into the hands of big foreign companies ; otherwise, all increases must be passed on to the public, as the shipowners cannot bear them.
