A man, whose name is unknown, and two boys— Gordon Brown, aged fourteen, and Fred Allen, aged fifteen— were swept off the groyne at the entrance to th« river, while fifth ing, this mornin"-. The mam disappeared, and has not since been seen. Allen was saved by lifelines thrown to^hini, which he grasped. An attempt was made to save Brown Hewitt Douglas, a dredge hand, jumping into the water and holding on to him for. ten minutes, but he had: to let go owing to the force of the seas, and the boy was drowned, Douglas ,\vith difficulty regaining the pier.
