DEFENCE ACT.
LABOUR DELEGATES CONFERRING. JOINT COMMITTEE SET UP. It was announced . at the Trades and Labour Conference, after The Poet went to prees* yeeterdav, that the Labouv Party*? Conference had set up a Defence ' Committee, consisting of Messrs. J. A. M'Cullough, E. J. Carey, E. Tregear. and Professor Mille, to m-eet a committee from the Trades Council, with a view to conferring and reporting to the Unity Conference on the conscientious clauses of the Defence Act. Mr. Breen (Otago) moved, and Mr. Gold-en (Auckland) seconded, that a committee of four be set up to meet the delegation appointed by the Labour [ Party.Mr. W. Naughton (Wellington) opposed the proposal. The carrying of the motion would talce the matter out of the- hands of the Conference. • Ho would not object if the committee were required to report first to tho conference, ;md not to a itTreigu body. Mr. lteader (Timaru) also objected to 'the motion, on thy ground that his council had not been inionnad that the Defence Act was to be discussed. The pieaidcnt said it was hardly fail' to describa tho Unity Conference as a "foreign body." Mr. G. 11. Whitias (Chmtchurch) supported the motion #6 a way out of lie difficulty.
