PERSONAL MATTERS.

The Governor left Wellington this morning for Dannevirke. His Excellency will return to Wellington early tomorrow. Sir Joseph Ward will visit Invercargill after Easter. He will probably •be entertained at banquets both at Awarua, and in Invercargill Mr. O. S. Lanchu, Chinese Consul, leaves for Sydney on Friday. Mr. W. L. Rees, a former member of Parliament, has been seriously indisiposed at his home in Gisborne. Mr. John Fuller, junr., who has been on a business visit to Sydney, returned to Wellington by the Moana to-day. Mr. B. C. Kirk, of Messrs. Levin and Co.'s local warehouse, has gone to Patea to assume charge of the firm's branch there. • Mr. R. B. Gardener, who has been Mayor of Levin since the town was made a borough, is to be opposed this year by Mr. Blenkhorn. Mr. H. L. Cook, LL.B., Associate to the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) was to-day admitted as a barrister and solicitor by the Chief Justice, on the motion of Mr. H. H. Ostler. Mr. David Brand, of the firm of Messrs. Brand and Johnston, who has been in bad health of late, became worse yesterday, and it was found necessary to Temove him to the hospital. Mr. Charles Rueeel], of Rona Bay, aa ex-councillor, will probably be a candidate for the vacancy on the Eastbourne B6rough Council, caused by the resignation of Mr. G. L. Bannatyne. Among the passengers who arrived by the $laori from the South this morning were: Sir George Clifford, Bart., Archbishop Redwood, Dr. Teichelmann, Dr. Begg, Dr. Fyffe, and the Hon. G. J. Smith, M.L.C. Mr. Eric Denis Hacon, who died in Auckland on Monday, after an anaesthetic had been administered prior to an operation, was at one time a member of the Star Boating Club, and at the request of the committee a wreath on behalf of the club was placed on his coffin. Messrs. Keele and Cullen, harbour engineers, of Sydney and Brisbane, respectively, who were invited to visit New x Zealand to report on the Napier harbour, are making a comprehensive local investigation. After leaving Napier they propose visiting Taupo, Rotprua, and Auckland, returning to Australia by way of the Bluff and Melbourne. Dr. Teichellmann, who is leaving Hokitika for a twelve months' trip to Europe, reached Wellington to-day. He was farewelled by a representativegathering of Westland residents on Friday evening. Dr. Teichellmann is one of our most enthusiastic Alpine climbers, and has on several occasions negotiated the Franz Joseph glacier. • Mr. A. Webster, Petone Town Clerk, yesterday resigned his position as secretary of the Petone Fire Board, in consequence of the new agreement Dnder which he is employed by /the Borough Coundl. In moving that the resignation be accepted with regrtt, Mr. M'Ewan stated that Mr. Webster had been a very willing officer. He had had a gTeat deal of -work to do in the initiation of the board, and he had been largely helpful in placing the board on its present business footing. It was to be regretted that the council would not permit him to continue as secretary. • Mr. Webster was accorded a vote of thanks for his past services. There was a representative gathering of citizens at the' Palmexston North Council Chamber this morning, when the Ma^yor (Mr. J. A. Nash), on behalf of residents of the. town, presented* Inspector Norwood with, a purse of sovereigns and Mrs. Norwood with a. •handsome tea service on the . occasion of ~. their departure for Greymouth, whither the inspector has been transferred. Our 'local correspondent telegraphs that Mr. Nash, in making the .presentations, apoke cordially vf the popularity of the inspector and Mrs. Norwood ■ during their residence here, and ou behalf of the citizens wished them all happiiiea* and prosperity in their new home. The remains of the late Mr. George Brown, of Buller-street, were interred in St. Joseph's Church Cemetery, Upper Hutt, on Tuesday in the presence of a very large and representative gathering of friends and relatives of deceased. Amongst others who came from a distance were Messrs. W. H. Field, M. O'Connor, and R. B. Williams, whilst several octogenarian settlers were present at the graveside Prior to the usual ceremony a very beautiful service was Tendered by the Very Rev. Father O'Shea, vicar-general, and Father Daly, the Rev. Father Lane being also m attendance. The many telegrams and letters of condolence and beautiful v-wreathsv -wreaths indicated the high esteem in which deceased was held.
