ADVERTISING ON TRAMS.
TO TUB EDITOn. Sir,— l quit* agree with Councillor Barber that such an important matter as the contract for advertising on the trams bhould not have been so summarily dismissed by the City Council. The position as far as one can understand is this : — The council accepted a contract for -advertising on the trams. I believe that there was some trouble about' guarantors which was finally arranged. There were several other excellent firms in for this contract who had no difficulty whatever in finding guarantors or even paying a substantial deposit. Yet the council, with their usual shortsightedness, accepted this particular tender. By doing this they barred other enterprising firms, who could have carried out the contract successfully and with mutual advantage to tho council themselves. I am of opinion that the council have created an exceedingly bad precedent in allowing any contractor to terminate his contract when he finds that it is not paying. By actions such as these the council are only encouraging firms who are" ignorant of the true value of what they are contracting for and discouraging firms who thoroughly understand their businees. — I am, etc., "CONTRACTOR." Wellington, 26th March, 1912. ' It 16 understood that Sir Joseph Ward will visit Australia prior to the opening of Parliament. A letter has" been received' by the Acting-Mayor (Councillor Smith) from the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P.), who reports himself in improved health. Mr. Wilford makes numerous enquiries as to various important matters that wore before the council when he left New Zealand. An Order in Council ie about to be iesued postponing tho operation of tho now regulations regarding tho examination of teachers in certain respects, to enable candidates to take the next examination either under the old or the new regulations. It has also been decided to postpone for a_ year the requirement of practical certificates in science subjects, except in so far ac these were previously required. Members of St. Jainesj« Footbull Club, will hold a practice this evening.
