PERSONAL MATTERS.
Me. F. T. O'Neill, Chief Clerk of the Lands Department, has been appointed Assistant Under-Secretary for Lands— a new position. Mr. E. L. Mowbray, Accountant to the Treasury, i& about to retire from the service, and will be succeeded by Mr. A. O. Gibbes, Chief Clerk in thn Treaeury, who will in turn be eucceedod by Mr. J. J. Eeson. Mr. J. P. Puttick, oi Oamaru, nas beet: elected a member of the West Coast Railways' Superannuation Fund Board, in succession to Mr. W. A. Yeiteh, M.P., who has resigned as the representative of the Second Division. "Recent Civil Service appointment* include the following : — Mr. X B. Burdekin to be Deputy-Official Assignee at Napier ; Mr. Claude H. Mills to be Crown Solicitor at Blenheim ; Sergeant W. Lyons to be an inspector under the Factories Act. The death occurred yesterday (reports our Feabherstou correspondont), of Mrs. Yelverton, wife of Mr. Auguntus Yalverton, nt the advanced age of 74 yeai's. Th& deceased lady who was born at Longworth (Berkshire-), England, Came to N«w Zealand in fche early days, and has been a reeident of Featheieton for many years. For a number of years following their marriage at Wellington Mr. and Mrs. Yeiverton resided in that city! The Lite Mr*. Yfelverton Jeeves a family of tliree eons, Messrs. Barry, Foster and Longworth well known local residents, and two daughters, Mrs. H. Bsnfcon (Dannevirke) and Mrs. C. Benton (AlI'redton). Sir Arthur Guinness, Speaker of the House of Representatives, leavee this evening on a trip to Australia. His object is to visit various placeß in Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, with a view to getting full particulars as to the regulations for miners working underground in gold and coal mines, and the hours and conditions of work. He also desires to aosertain in the different States the conditions under which prospecting grants and subsidies are made by the Government, and at Newcastle particularly to ascertain the latest facilities and arrangements for shipping coal, with a view, if necessary, of introducing them at the port of Greyniouth. The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital yesterday after a lengthy illneEe, of Mrs. K. Wilson, a well-known resident of Petone for close on thirty years. Mrs. Wilson leaves two sons — Mr. George H. Cates, chief ,clerk at the Petone Post Office, and Mr. William A. Cates, of the Petone Wollen Milk.
