Mr. J. Strauchon, whose appointment as Under-Sccretary for Lands was reported yestorday, was born at- Berwick in 1848, and came to the colony when a boy. He was born in Edinburgh sixty-three years ago, and whs educated at Dunedin. He entered the Otago Provincial Survey Department in 1867, and in 1872 was appointed «*• eistant-6uvveyor for the Wellington province, district surveyor in 3874, and in chief draughtsman for tho Wellington district. In 1902 he waft promoted to be Commissioner of Crown ! Lands and Chief Surveyor for the Auckland district, and five years ago wac, appointed to his present position as Commissioner of Crown Lands for tho Wellington district.
