ALLEGED THEFT.
CHARGE AGAINST A SECRETARY. Frederick William Green, late secretary of the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute, stood his trial at the Supremo Court today on a chargo of stealing '£175 7s 6d, the property of the club, between July and November, 1911. Mr. H. H. Ostler was the Crown Prosecutor, and Mr. A. L. Herdman appeared for the_ prisoner. The club, said Mr. Ostler, was a large institution, and the monthly bar takings would be between £600 and £800. Green had to keep the books. The evidence would show that he had not paid into the bank all he received, and some of this deficiency was not accounted for. Eventually accused was asked to resign. Mr. Maoe, who endeavoured to find a balance, found that there was an incorrect entry in the cash-book, and ajeo discovered erasures and alterations, which would bo shown to the jury- The auditors wero 'called in, and Green was arrested. Edward Maco, president of the club, gave lengthy evidence with particular references to the erasures. To Mr. Herdman: Witness never asked him to explain the discrepancies. Ho had a conversation with Green after his dismissal, but witness did not tell him that everything was all right. (Proceeding).
