— — ♦ 440 YARDS RECORD BROKEN. fBT TELEGRAPH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 30th January. The first of the inter-club swimming contests between Sydney and Waitemata Clubs was decided to-night at the Albertstreet Baths. Hundreds of spectators had *ii c * urned away, the building being full. Tho swimming was of a high class, and the programme, which included a number of handicap ovents, producod exoellent finishes. In the 440 yards soratoh inter-club race M. E. Chkmpion lowered his New Zealand record from smin 54 3-sseo to smin 48seo. This event was won by Champion (Waitemata), with Welson ( Waitemata) second, three yards away, and L. Boardman (Sydney) tnird. Sydney won the 540 yards relay race. These were tho only i wo inter-club scratch races. The others will be decided at two more carnivals during tho week. Miss Duraek, Australian lady ohampion,' won the lades' handicap, 36 yards, in 20 4-sseo.
