THE SENATE.

• TO-DAY'S BUSINESS. B.A. DEGREE. The session of the University Senate was resumed to-day,' the Chancellor (Sir Rohert Stout) presiding. MATHEMATICS NOT COMPULSORY FOR B.A. DEGREE. Little discussion took place on the following motion by Rev. A. Cameron : — "That mathematics be not compulsory for the B.A. degree." The mover reminded that this had been agreed to by the Senate last year, but had not been sent to the Statutes' Committee because the question of B.A. and B.Sc. was to be referred to the Profe£sorial Board. ' Then it was agreed to by the professors at a previous conference, on the motion of Professor Picken, and while there might be reasons for still delaying in view of the possibility of reference to the conference, still a great hardship would be caused, the mover contended, to those students who had begun their course in expectation that the resolution of the previous con-! ference of the professors and of the Senate last year would be given effect to at this meeting of Senate. The motion was seconded by Dr. Hight and carried unanimously. NEW DECLARATION FOR MATRICULATION. Professor J. R. Brown moved : — That the university no longer issue the Matriculation Declaration. Form direct to tho&e who have passed the matriculation examination (of which the name might be changed) ; but that books containing three forms as set out below be supplied to the Registrars of the . colleges, together with the declaration form as also set out below. That the Registrar of each college fill up the forms, keep one form, hand one to each student^ and send the third to the Registrar of the University of New Zealand. That the Registrar of each college, before entering a student Upon the books of his college as a matriculation student, shall inspect the examination certificate of the student. That the Registrar of each college shall furnish the Registrar of the University of New Zealand with a list of all such enrolments not later than. Ist June in each- year, after which date no further matriculation . shall take place that year. Books are to be isened containing the forma separated by .perforation, the butt carrying the student's name, the date, and the name of the^ college, to be Tetained by the Registrar. The second will represent to the student a certificate that he has been entered upon the books of the college. The third block will inform the Registrar of the^ New Zealand University that the Registrar of the -college had taken from the student the following declaration: — I, .► having passed the Matriculation Examination of the University of New Zealand, do hereby solemnly promise that I will faithfully obey the statutes of the university so far as they apply to me ; and I hereby declare that 1 believe myself to have atfcair.ed the age of 16 years. The motion was carried. Mr. G. Hogben moved : "That the marks for French in the Junior Scholarship examination be raised to 1000." j An amendment was submitted by Professor J. MacMillan Brown : — "That the marks for German be reduced to those of French." After discussion, the following amended motion was put and carried :—: — "That the marks for German in the Junior Scholarship examination be lowered to 850." MOTION WITHDRAWN. Sir Maurice O'Rorke moved :— "That on Parliament this year amending the University law so as to sanction the granting of Divinity degrees, the following members of the Senate be appointed as a committee to draw up the curriculum for the examination for such degrees in 1913 : — Mr. Allen, Rev. Mr. ! Camerop, Rev. Mr. Evans, Dr. Fitchett, Rev. Professor Saljnond, Hon. J. A. Tole, and the mover; that the exam- | iners for such degrees in '1913 be Bishop I Neville, Professor Dickie, Bishop Sprott, and Dr. Fitchett. That it be the duty of the Senate in 191.3 to revise or amend I the curriculum for 1914 and the following years as it may think proper; that "the intention of granting degrees in Divinity be notified to the Universities of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmania, and Queensland, and the . newspapers in those colonies." Professor Salmond seconded the motion, pro forma. He did not like to see it treated with contempt, and he was afraid that it would be rejected. .There was no great hurry for this. It could ■.veil wait over until the Legislature had done what it was asked to do. It would be better to allow it to lapse, rather than put it to a precarious vote. Several senators coincided with Pro- - fessor Salmon3's suggestion. The mover decided to withdraw his motion. v DECEMBER EXAMINERS COMMITTEE.
