A WELL-KNOWN ATHLETE.
Dennis Lane, the South Sydney harrier, who returned to Sydney on Tuesday week from New Zealand, where he had represented New South Wales at tho Australasian championships, is now lying in a serious condition in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, says the Sydney Daily Telegraph of Thursday last. The cause of Lane'e illness is unknown. It •eems to be something in tho nature of a strain internally, but the doctors have not yet come to any decision. It may be deemed necessary to perform an operation in the course of a day or two. Lane, who appeared to be in good health, arrived home with the manager of the New South Wales team, Mr. G. Parke, shortly after noon, and a little later complained that he was suffering great pain from what he thought must l>e a strain. During the afternoon his removal to the hospital was ordered. Lane iB one of the best known amateur athletes in New South Wales, and is \ regarded as being, the best all-round athlete in, Australia. He has first-class performances at all branches of athletics, and is the holder of the Australasian hop-step-and-jump record.
