She left Lyttelton at 6.20 p.m. as usual, but the engineers discovered that something was amiss with the machinery, and Captain Manning decided to return to port. The steamer camfe into the outer harbour and aitchored', awaiting the tug, and was subsequently brought, to the inner harbour. Many of the passengers were not even aware of the change -in the vessel's course, and were still asleep when the Mararoa came alongside the wharf. It is stated; that a crack developed in the thrust box, but happily it was not serious enough to prevent the * vessel going ahead, but tha captain decided not to take the risk of going on to Wellington, and returned to Lyttelton. Th© passengers wil| go North by the Maori to-night. Repairs are being effected, and the Mararoa will resum© her iunmng* tomorrow night. [Passengers from Wellington for Lyttelton this evening will journey by the> steamer Mokoia.]
