MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M^ presided over to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. For insobriety, Mary Patterson was fined ss; Thomas Kobb, William Telford, and •• John Ramsay, alias Fisher, 10s each, all with the usual alternative for default. Five, first offenders Were also dealt with. . * , Edward Patrick Owen used some particularly bad language in Molesworthstreet after leaving an hotel, and was fined £3* ill default fourteen days' imprisonment. Joseph Wilson and Herbert Reynolds, who failed to appear, were charged- with stealing a teapot and several cups, valued afc • 35., the property of the Harbour Ferries Company. Captain White, of the Awaroa, said that on Wednesday last he engaged the accused to discharge coals. Apparently the men returned the stolen property* Another witness stated that the accused declared 1 they desired the articles for a "baeb./' as they would come in useful. Each accused was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' Imprisonment. Witneßsee 1 expenses, amounting to 12s, Were allowed. D. Gamandoa allowed a horse to wander in Buckle-street on Bth December. He was convicted, and mulcted in costs to the extent of 13s. For deserting v from the steamer Kaikoura, Gas Bergsfcrom, a seaman, was sent to prison for 14 days. . Emily Green. (Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon) brought a charge of obscene language against Caesari Perrotti, a fisherman at Lyall Bay, and the latter retorted in kind. His Worship "held that the evidence that the scene of the occurrence was a public place was insufficient, and dismissed the information. The counter allegation was thereupon withdrawn. Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh appeared for Perrotti. Michael Lane Was charged on the information of John Laiw, ex-cab propnetor, that, having received £6 7s 6d from Reginald Welsby on terms requiring him to account for it to John Lane, he failed to do so. and thereby committed theft. Mr. P. Jackson appeared for. complainant. The defence was that he gave the money, the proceeds of tho sale of a brougham, to. John Lane., His^ Worship said he did not believe accused, but said he did not think a criminal charge should have been brought, as civil action ehould have been taken, The case would be diimiesed.'
