The demand for dairy farm hands has steadily increased, both for nien and "boy* used to tha work, but th« supply has • nob been, equal to the demand. Twenty j j men have been placed at this daas of 1 work, whilst there were openings for moro th&n double the number if the ! workers had been avaikble. As stated in this and previous reports, if the Department has bean unable to find work for men locally there have always been openings available in tha country districts. Skilled tradesmen ap pear to have been fairly well employed m Wellington throughout file winter, but a good doal of time has been lost owing to the jobs offering being merely of a casual nature. However, adds the report, local men. have evidently had confidence, in the future, as they could not be induced to take up more permanent positions in, such towns as Wa nganui, Palmerston North. Napier, and Hastings. The outlook 'or the coming spring and summer is exceedingly bright, and aay man anxious and willing to work should not be idle. Daring the period work has been found for 141 men. (43 married and 93 single), with 120' dependento. Eighty of tho m«i were sent to private employment,, and 61 to. i Government works., The total shows i an increase of 41 over tho July period.
