THE HON. T. MACKENZIE. WHICH SEAT WILL HE STAND FOR? A FARMING CONSTITUENCY DESIRED.
Seen by a Post reporter tOday »»• carding the seat he was likely to stand For at the coming elections, the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. T. Mackenzie) said the position was that the alterations of the Taieri seat appeared to him to be so absurd that ho could hardly believe but that the Commissionera will put it right. They have still that opportunity, "Should thi* be done, or even largely restored," continued Mr. Mackenzie, "I am free to stand for that seal, Tf, however, they will not do anything, then I iim at liberty to stand for any country seat in New Zealand that may wish my services^ Naturally I am do« sifous of continuing the wopk of the Department with which I am associated. I can see that with an intelligent, scientific forward movement in agriculture, there is a prospect of doing much good' for this community, The two and a-half years that I have been Minister have been a period of preparation for gt eater effort. Throughout the whole world we see the highest intelligence being directed, as it should be, towards increasing the fruitfulness of the earth, and whilst we have advantages here iv some respects, we suffer from disadvantages in others. Every condition of land should be dealt with ; the products of our soils must be brought to the highest standard and shipped to the markets of the world under the best condition* possible, and handled there with intelligence and capacity, otherwise New Zealand will suffer. I naturally wish to represent a farming community, and hope that such may be available lor me at the next election.''
