BUTTER AND CHEESE.
HIGH PRICES IN LONDON. tfhe New Zealand butter season is about to opett;, and dairy farmers are in good heart at the strength of the English market at the moment. This may be gauged by a comparison of prices at per cwt to-day and two years ago:—
New Zealand cheese, too, shows a marked advance (at this time* of year compared with prices per cwt two years ago;—
The present high prices have made dairy farmer directors of factories chary of selling their Reason's outputs to buyers fof the United Kingdom, and also of making contracts for supplying the local market*. The highest price otfered for butter (cheese is not being quoted at present) is ll|d per pound for the whole season. The factories are generally holding out for ll^d pef pound free on board at Wellington. So *ar as local consumers are concerned it would seem that they will have to come into line with the United Kingdom consumer. If he has to pay a long price for his New Zealand butter, they, too, will have to pay accordEven when the season is opened, or batte* is already oeing made to a small extent, it k not yet clear that the mean level of Is Id to Is 2d per ppund for the first-class brands win be reached. Whether steps will be taken towards the close ,of the" coming season to retain sufficient butter in tHe Dominion for the Dominion's aeede until thia 1912-13 season opens remain© to be seen.
