DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEF.
News has been received of the death of the well-known octogenarian chief Mahnlii, whose short, sturdy figure and beatftifully-tattooed-faoe Were well known at native gatherings in the North. The death took place nt Oparttari, where a big tangi >has been in progress. The deceased fought through the Waikato war. and was present at the battle of Orakau, holding the rank of sergeant under Tawhana, and was the last of the three fighting chiefs who_ went through the war.
