TRAMWAY TROUBLES. ROSTER DIFFICULTY IN CHRISTCHURCH.

SEEKING A SATISFACTORY SCHEDULE. fBT TBIiEGBA^K— SPfiCIAL TO THS FOBT.I CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The difficulties of drawing up a schedule of duties for the tramway conductors ahd motormen so that there should be a fair distribution of night and day work and of broken time, ha,v<i beset the officials of the Christchurch Tramway Board for a 1 long time, and the solution of the problem does not seem to be any nearer than it was two months ago. Tha- traffic manager, since the publication of the first roster of duties v that aroused the men's ire, has been seeking the satisfactory schedule, but so far, although he has drawn up several list®, success has eluded him in the task of securing the will-o'-the-wisp. The employees have taken a hand, and the Tramway Employees' Union has submitted two rosters. The first was considered, but nob adopted, and resulted _ iti a schedule thai, gave less satisfaction than its. predecessor. Th<Ki the union submitted another, but the traffic manager, after considering it, staled that it could not be worked, and he then framed another roster. The latest schedule drawn up provided that certain lines should be permanent, so that men on those routes would work alternate night and day shifts every week. Sumner, New Brighton, Riccarton, _ and NoTth New Brighten were mentioned among th© permanent _ Sines, the remainder of the service being arranged on a separate roster. The men object to the new arrangement, which gives the benefit of alternate shifts to a section and throws the burden of the bad times upon the remainder. They also complain that the men selected for the permanent line* were chosen haphazard without any t regard to seniority or length of experience of the lines, or efficiency. It is stated that the men consider tho roster _ submitted by the union to ba the- fairest prepared so far, and think that it is workable.
