SERIES OF BURGLARIES.

A SMART ARREST. Detectives. Lewis, Andrews, and Cameron to-day accomplished a smart piece of work in the recovery of a great quantity of valuables, the property of private .individuals and of the Wellington City Council. For scyie time past burglary after burglary had been reported „to the police ■ as having been effected in various parts of the city. '. Detection was difficult, but as time wore on it was not so hopeless as at first appeared. Finally, an arrest ■ was made of a man of about thirty-two years of age. Tho next step was lo recover the property, which , consisted of rings, watches, silver cigarette cases, odd coins, pictures, clothing, boots, and other articles. Most of the plunder was recovered. It had been concealed on the reclaimed land, beyond Waterloo-quay, and in places familiar to the detectives. The dates of the burglaries were as follows : — Mr. David Williamson, Grantroad, 18th March ; ; Mr. Phillip Nathan, Hill-street, and Mr. W. C. LTasquoine, Hill-street, ' 22nd March; Dr. C. P. Knight, Bolton, street, 15th April; Mr. Richard Pilling, Adelaide-road, 13th April; Mr. N. Jacobs, Thorndon-quay, 17th April; and Mr. Algar Williams, Hobson-street, 3rd May. Coins of value, which had been stolen from the Newtown Museum, were also recovered, as well as a large quantity of plates cut from books in the Wellington Public Library.
