MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

o Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. For insobriety three first offenders were leniently dealt with. Charged with assaulting Nicholas Normille and causing him actual bodily harm, Wm. John Carpenter, Btoreman on the steamer Tainui, was further remanded until the 10th insfc. Bail was allowed as before. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for .accused. A young man named William Nicholas Dalley .was before the court on two charges of _ wilfully making, for the purpose of being inserted in the Register of Births and Deaths, a certain fake statement touching a particular required to ba inserted. The offence took place at \ Kohatu on the 2nd of February. Chief Detective Broberg prosecuted, and accused was represented by Mr. H. F. O'Leary. Arthur Ralph Evane, Registrar of Births and Deaths at Motupiko, Nelson, stated that on the 2nd of February accused called at hi 3 office, and under the 'name of Fredk. William Thompson registered the birth and death of a male child, the mother's name being given at Daisy Thompson. Witness's suspicions were subsequently aroused, and ho reported the matter to headquarters. Detective Kemp deposed to interviewing . accused, who admitted making a false declaration, but stated that ho did not know it was an offence. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed for trial. John Coope and_ Samuel_ Nicholls were jointly charged with stealing two fowls, valued at 6s, the property of Patrick O'Callaghan. Coope pleaded guilty, and waa sentenced to two months' imprisonment. A plea of not guilty was entered by Nicholls, who was represented by Mr. Meredith, but tho evidence was against him. He was fined 20s, with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment. This morning's sitting of_ the Mount Cook Police Court wa3 presided over by Mr. J. M. Geddis, J.P. Norman Campbell, for drunkenness, was fined _40s, with an option of fourteen days' imprisonment; George Crawford _ Yoxon pnd James Shepherd, for similar offences, were each fined ss, the alternative being fixed at tvyenty-four hours in gaol. _ One first-offending inebriate was convicted and discharged.
