HATAITAI AFFAIRS.

THE ELECTORS' ASSOCIATION. The Committee of the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association, in the report to be. presented at the annual meeting, states that the membership has increased. Following the directions given at the last general meeting, held in April, 1910, the committee has let no opportunity pass in endeavouring to obtain, better means of access to the city. Two mass deputations were organised, which waited on the Mayor and City Council. The first deputation was jointly made with the Kilbirnie and Roseneath Associations as the outcome of a resolution passed at a meeting of the Kilbirnie and Hataitai Associations, which unanimously requested the city authorities to construct a tunnel on tha nearest direct route to Courtenay-place. The position now is that the City Council has b«n offered, at a very reasonable figure, the necessary land at Rixon-grove, and the City Engineer has been asked to make a report on the matter. There can be no question, that a tunnel at a point north" of the present one will serve well all the- districts to the south as weD as Hataitai. The construction of a reservoir near Wai-papa-road has been the means of giving a good supply to the district. Three fire-alarm boxes were put up in the district, but the> efforts of the committee to obtain one in Maitai-road have, so far, not been successful. Efforts were unsuccessfully made to induce the Education Board to purchase land in Hataitai for the purpose of a school. This is tt> be regretted, as a school will be an absolute necessity for the district at no very distant date. The committee has had several communications with the civic authorities relative to the state of Rata-road, and promises were made that the street would be put in good repair some months ago. The matter is still receiving the attention of the committee. The City Council authorities advise that J all new roads have to be under the conditions approved by the council. Tne original roads of x-he district; were under agreement with tlra old Melros© Council, hence it is that no channelling or asphalting has been done. The following is the outcome of the committee's work : — Land Company has 1 formed a track from Kainui-road to the beach : the name "Hataitai" has. been, placed over the waiting-shed and also at the stopping place; the roads ha-ve been cleared of gorse, weeds, etc. ; members of the- committee have canvassed the district for purpose of enrolling residents on the elctoral roll; a horee trough has been obtained. '
