ROWTNG REGATTA.

FAVOURED BY FINE WEATHER. SOME GOOD RACES. Seldom in the history of the Wellington Rowing Association has so much interest been manifested in its annual regatta as was shown 10-day, when about fifty crews from various parts of New Zealand 'participated in the ten events on the programme. Tlie entries constituted a recoil for the local association. Excellent weather conditions prevailed, and when the day broke in a calm it was hoped that no wind would spring up during the day. Fortunately, only a light southerly "commenced towards midday, alid it had freshened somewhat when the first race started a little before 1 o'clock. The breeze swept across Oriental Bay beyond the Clyde-quay Wharf, and raised a slight jobble towards Point Jerningham, with a strong outward drift. Nevertheless, the conditions were on the whole fairly favourable for racing. Results up to the time of going to press were as follow :—: — Maiden Fours, one mile. First prize, £8; second, £2. — Canterbury Rowing Club (D. E. Cogan stroke, E. R. Baxter 3, 0. G. Farrow 2, H. B. Hamilton bow), 1; Star Boatinsr Club (F. J. Alexander, ¥. G. Craig, "K. C. Akers, and F. W. Abercrombie), 2; Wairau flowing Club {C. Adams, J. M'Donald, G. Adams, and T. Gill), 3. Also started— Union Rowing Club of Christchurch (G. Tasker, E. Dallison, \V.- Burley, and N. Baggs), and Wellington Rowing Club (A. W. Jackson, E. Cairns, G. Jones, and A. Barry). Won by a quarter of a length, about a Jength separating the second and third crews. Time, 6min 32sec. Canterbury secured a, lead at the beginning, and were unchallenged till about a quarter of a mile from the 'finish (between 1 the Taranaki-street Wharf and the Queen's Wharf), when the Stars, getting into smoother water, extended themselves a good deal more, and lessened the- interval by fast, strong work. Senior Sculls, one mile and a half. First prize, Pearce trophy and £5 (trophy to be held by winner for a year). — There were only two entries, Blenheim TS.C. (A. Jackson) and Wanganui R.C. (A. S. C. Anderson). Anderson took charge from the start, and almost immediately secured a lead of two lengths. Jackson got off his course and out into the jobble, through which he ploughed with rather sluggish strokes. Anderson kept closer in shore, and worked in smoother water. It looked as though the Blenheim man would be swamped. The result was an easy win for Anderson by about ZOO yards. Time, lOmin 44scc. Junior Clinker Pairs, one mile. First prize £5, second £1. — Petone Rowing Club (B. Tremain and D. Byrne), 1 ; Christchurch Union R.C. (W. Beaumont and H. Dallison), 2; Wellington R.C. (8. Standcn and A. W. Mathieson), 3. Won by a quarter of a length. Time, 7min 20 2-ssec. Aleo started : Star Boating Club (C. H. Lawrence and M. A. Turner), Picton Rowing Club (N. Godfrey and Lcs Godfrey), and Wanganui Rowing Club (T. B. Slipper and B. Tremewan). Christchurch Union started well, their work being conspicuously clean and strong in the jobble. They were overhauled iv about half a mile by Wellington, who in turn succumbed to Petono. Wanganui stopped about half way from home, and Petone, by dint of good combination and steady work, secured a well-deserv-ed win. Maiden Double Sculls, one mile. — Sunmer Rowing Club 1, Star Boating Club 2, Canterbury R.C. 3. Time, 6min 58 4-ssec. Youths' Fours, one mile. — Picton R.C. 1, Christchurch Union 2, Wanganui Union 3. Official's for the races were as follow : Judges. Messrs. R, W. M'Villy, A. O-. Fell, and R. MoUies; umpire. Mr. N. Galbraith; starter, Mr. J. E. Wirldop ; boat committee, Messrs J. A. Bishop, C. E. Bridge, and C. H. Burridge; course committee, Messrs. J. E. Widdbp, A. J. Bishop, and B. A. Marris; timekeepers. Messrs. W. F. Ross and L. W. Ludwig ; hon. secretary, Mr. B. A. Marris ; general committee, executive of the Wellington Rowing Association and Messrs. N. Gaibraith, A. D. Bayfkld, and A. J. Bishop. During the afternoon the ferry steamer Admiral touched at the Taranaki-street Wharf between each event, and conveyed a large number of &pectators. The senior fours event — the ""blue ribbon " race ot the regatta — was postponed from 2.30 to 5.30 p.m.. in the hope that the wind would have gone down. Four crev;s N are engaged — Christchurch Union Rowing Club, Union Boating Club (Waiiganui). Picton Rowing Club, and Blenheim Rowing Club. Wanyanui Union were winners cf the Australasian championships at Hobart last year, and the composition of tho crew is exactly the same as on that occasion. Blenheim were runnprs-up, and the other competitors have each a record of fine work. A great tussle for supremacy wab expected to-day. The southerly wind continued to freshen as the afternoon advanced, and more than ono boat shipped an unpleasant quantity of water.

Messrs John Duthie and Co.'s- tender for the supply of water ]3ipes required in connection with the duplication of the Wainuiomata. main, which was accepted by the City Council yesterday, was for £48,334. 'The first shipment will arrive in five months, and thereafter in instalments of 20 per cent. The expiry of the contract time is nine months. Tho organ in St. John's Church, which has been for some months past in the hands of Norman and Bea*rd, undergoing repairs and improvements, is to bo reopened at the services to-morrow.
