MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Katherine Brooker, alias Kate Lynn, admitted having importuned in Vic-toria-street, and was sentenced' to a month's imprisonment. Three charges were admitted by Daniel Herlihy, (1) disorderly behaviour in the Hotel Cecil while drunk last night; (2) having refused to quit the hotel when requested to do so, and (3) having assaulted Pereival Richard Waddy, who had assisted in putting accused off the premises. "Herlihy was fined 20s, with a seven days' option, on each' of the first two charges ,- punished in the sum of £2, with a similar alternative, for the assault. Use of obscene language was admitted by Gustavo Lindiloil, who was fined £4, default being fixed at one month's imprisonment. A man named Samuel Hugh Strain, whom Chief-Detective Broberg described as a "notorious hotel thief," denied being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful means of support. The evidence showed that about midday yesterday he "was seen to enter room 36 in the Hotel Cecil ; ho had no authority or right to be there. According i to his own story, he had been drinking heavily and intended to have a wash in the bathroom before going to dinner. When he came fiom Ac country he had £5, but when arrested, only 9s lOd. ! The man had a bad record * for theft from hotels in Australia and New Zealand, and had served various terms of imprisonment. His Worship was not prepared to sentence Strain on a, charge of having insufficient lawful means of support; defendant was convicted and ordered to come' up for sentence when ' called upon. Mr. O'Leary appeared for accused, who denied the i allegations and vas allowed bail in the I sum of £4. Mr. Thomas Bland. J.P., presided afc this morning's sitting of the Mount Cook Police Court. Joseph John Toben, for drunkenness, was fined ss, or in default 2A hours' gaol, and Norman Reginald Smith, for a similar offence, vas lined 10s, the alternative being fixed at 48 hours in gaol.
