After a tumultuous debate, the Cham- j ber of Deputies, by 340 votes to 168, re- ! fused to censure the Government for not releasing Durand, sentenced to death in ! connection with the murder of a "blackleg," the sentence being afterwards commuted. [Last November, at Rouen, four railway strikers, including Durand, were convicted of murder. Durand was sentenced to death, and the others to terms j of imprisonment. The evidence showed j that Durand had proposed that the question tof the assassination (of the "blackleg" be put to the vote. The sentence on Durand was subsequently commuted to seven years' imprisonment.]
