A RECENT DROWNING.

THE INQUEST. fBY TELEGRAPH — PHESS ASSOCIATION.] WESTPORT, 30th January. An inquest touching the death of William Henry Whittaker, whcse body was fennel in a backwash of the Buller River, five miles above Westport, yesterday, was held at the courthouse today. Evidence was given by Jame-Bill-st, to the effect that he and Whittaker were cross-ing the Inangahua River, a tributary of the Buller, on Christmas Day, when the boat capsized and Whittaker was disowned, Billet being carried" over a mile down the river en the beat to which he clung, and landed on an island from which he gat at>hore next day. Mrs. Whittaker gave evidence that deceased was a Tasmenian, forty-three years of age, and they had a family of one child. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
