The receipts of the Wellington City Tramway Department for the past week wero greater by £461 6s than those for the corresponding period of last year. Last week'B figures were-: —

Some discussion took place on the item on to-day's* order-sheet of the Wellington Education Board: "Building grant, 1910 — £6503." Mr. Hogg asked for enlightenment as to the distribution of the appropriations. Finally it was decided that Lhe question of defining the distribution ot' th© building grant m the matter of new buildings, restorations, and repairs be referred to the Finance Committee. Mr. T. E. Taylor, M.P.. when addressing a meeting on Saturday night at Christchurch, referred to the fact that under the new Licensing Act the form of the ballot papers had been determin1 ed, and the arrangement of the issues in both the local option and national prohibition polls was such that the prohibition party would be able to combine to use its old battle-cry of "Strike out the top line." The mails which left Auckland on the 21st December by the s.s. Navna, and connected at Suva with the Vancouver mails -by the R.?rLS. Makura. arrived in London on the afternoon oi the 29th inst. It is understood that, in the absence of Mi-. C. P. Skerrett. K.C., leadjno counsel lor the New Zealand Times Company, Mr. S. Solomon, X.C.. of Dunedin, with Mr. A. Blair, of Wellington, will act as counsel for lho company in the action for alleged libel brought by Mr. W. F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, against the eompanv. Mr. H. D. Bell will act for Mr. Mawsey. The case will probably be heard at the civil siUingb of the Supreme Court, commencing .on the 13th. y-fbruar^. '
