EDUCATION BOARD.

FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR. The Wellington Education Board met to-day — its first meeting this year. Mr. Robert Lee presided. The following were present up to the time of our going to press : — Messrs A. W. Hosig, M.P., W. Allan, W. Elder, J. Kebbell, A. H. Vile, W. C. Buchanan. FINANCIAL. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £373 19s 4d, after payments were made as follow :—Buildings, "£I6OO 17s 7d; general, £1633 12s 8d; manual and technical, £171 0s 9d; secondary, £238 2s'; teachers' salaries, £5206 8s 7d; deposits, £52 2s. Total authorisations are set down at £2984 17s 6d. Receipts for January are given at £10,221 19s Id, and for December since last board meeting £2516 12s Id — a total of £12,738 lls 2d. Payments since last board meeting totalled!* £2235 9s 3d. In moving the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet, the chairman expressed his satisfaction at the very healthy state of affairs. The board was now practically out of its difficulties (financial), which had hung over it so long. The board was committed to the expenditure of £3000 for buildings already provided, and there was every reason to suppose that the same grant would be made 'for the coming year. While affairs had such a bright asp_ect, still the board must proceed cautiously. WORKS AND FINANCE. Grants were authorised for works at the following places : — Eketahuna, Pahiatua. Belvedere, Kilbirnie, Kaiwaiwai, South , Wellington, Martinborough Carterton, Mangaonc. Small matters in connection with a storm-water drain at South Wellington, and surface drainage at Potone, was referred to the clerk of works for report. Consideration of application for ,a subsidy -for Akitio was deferred. It was decided that the necessary repairs be executed to the school residence at Mungaroa before the new teacher enters. The proposal of the Pahiatua Borough Council for connection with drainage and water system supply was approved. The board decided it was inadvisable to sanction the structural alterations suggested at Petone West. Application is to be made for a grant for improvements at Mangatainoka. Library subsidies were approved as follows: — Maranui, Carterton. It was decided that action in re the site at Martinborough be deferred for a time, and that the chairman and secretary be empowered to make reply to the offer for site at Johnsonville. Mr. O. Stever's tender for painting Plimmerton school was accepted. The assistant at Hamua is to be paid salary for February and released from duty. This business was recommended by the Works and Finance Committee. (Proceeding.)
