LOST VESSELS— A SUGGESTION

o «O THE EDITOB. Sir, — Kindly allow mo a few lines in your paper to make a suggestion which, may be of interest to shipowners. We are all aware that the Penguin, the Waratah, and scores of other ships have been lost, and nobody knows of their whereabouts. > I would suggest if every ship were to carry on her boat deck a line fastened on to a ringbolt, with a buoy on the other end, Arith the ship's name and number on, that it would s>ave a lot of trouble to owners as well as insurance companies. — I am, etc., C.B. Wellington, 27th January.

At the meeting of the Wellington Education Board to-day, the following were appointed to represent the board on the Technical School Boards : — Wellington : Messrs. J. G. W. Aitken, W. Allen, W. H. Field, M.P. (reelected) ; Petone and Hutt : Messrs. Geo. London and David M'Kenzie. The chairman (Mr. Lee) intimated he could not spare the lime to attend. Mr. M'Ewen, who was replaced at Petone, was accorded a vote of thanks for his services in the past. Mr. H. G. Ell, M.P., is in communication with the Hon. Dr. Findlay, Minister of Justice, in regard to putting the four acres in Lincoln-road, Christchurch. on which the Samaritan Home standsj to a more practical use. It is proposed that a frontage of fifty or sixty feet should be used for a public library, and that the building should be removed and the rest of the ground used for workmen's homes. Dr. Findlay has told Mr. Ell, says the Star, that he will consider the proposal, and will communicate with him later on, when it is decided what shall be done with the Samaritan Home buildings. At the November meeting of the Southland Education Board notice of motion by Mr. Archdall, dealing with a very- impoilant principle in the promotion of teachers, was referred to the executive committee and 'the inspectors for consideration and report. Mr. Archdall f.eeks to introduce a reform, urgently desired by the majority of teachers, whereby an essential qualification for promotion to the more highly paid positions shaft be a definite period of sci \ ice m one of the more subordinate positions under the board, or, at least, under some Education Board.' It was explained at the last meeting of the Southland Education Board, lepevts the Times:, that the absence of the Chief I In.-pfetoi on en k leave had delayed conI s.deration oi the in? Her, which, ho\s§*"<Uj ia being kept eteadily in view.
