FIRES.

A BLAZE AT MILTON. fUT TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.]' DUNEDIN, 29th January. The front portion of an engineering shop at Milton, occupied by Alexander M'Donald, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Mr. M'foonaia was working in the rear part and was not aware of the fire until the flames had a very strong hold. Some machinery which was destroyed was insured for £200 in the State office, but Mr. M'Domald estimates his loss at £700. The fire evidently spread from some rubbish which was set on fire by some unknown person. On Saturday morning, at 3 o'clock, <the ; premises of Mr. W. H. Booth, ai Waipukurau, were completely destroyed by fire. The building, in which were Bit-anted an engineering works, blacksmith's shop, and coachbuilding works, was a large one. Many of the vehicles in the coachbuilding department were saved. The workmen were heavy losers. Insurances on the buildings^ £610, aaid on the machinery £300, botli in the Alliance office. The stock was covered by a policy in the Guardian office. Mr. Booth estimates his loss iA about- £600. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
