The Bank of England has reduced the rate of discount for best three months' bills from 4£ per cent.', at which it was fixed on Ist December last, to 4 per cent. (Received January 27, 10 a.m.) DIED FROM STARVATION. MELBOURNE, This Day. A man named William Stevens died from starvation on Monday. A year ago he swallowed a quantity of flaked lye in mistake for a sweetmeat. His throat gradually closed, and he was unable to take nourishment. Ho refused to undergo an operation. (Received January 27, 9.25 a.m.) GOLD IMPORTS AND EXPORTS. MELBOURNE, This Day. The gold imported into the Commonwealth last year was valued at £1,031,459. The export amounted to £4,738,14 J. Reuter's Agency at Capetown reports that the chief Sebele has died at Mafeking. NORWICH AGRICULTURAL SHOW. LONDON, 26th January. The King, in writing tc Mr. Ailwyn E. Fellows, calls attention to the invitation to overseas Ministers for Agriculture to attend the Royal Show at Norwich, and expresses the hope that many will be able to accept. MEALS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN. LONDON, 26th January. The County Council supplied 9,500,000 meals to school chfldnen during last year. The cost increased from lg-d per meal to 2d. AUSTRALIAN BAND CONTEST. SYDNEY, 26th January. In the inter-State band contest, 'the bands' own-choice selections in the B grade competitions resulted as follow : — Broken Hill Band, 97 points, 1; Sadnt George's City Baaid, 90 points, 2; Corrimal, 88 points, 3. There were six competitors.
