A deputation ot country settlers waited on "the Premier yesterday a-nd asked the Government to issue a proclamation prohibiting the abwiation of some 6000 acres ot native lands at Kai Iwi and Waitotara, at present held in large areas by European lessees, who are endeavouring to again secure the holdings. The deputation urged that the Government should cither purchase the. land or taks steps to hr.ye the same cut up into smalL aicas aaid Icnsed on behalf of the natives to sniaU fcirmeis. The land is firat-claps, suitable for dairying. Instances weae quoted of farmers adjoining doing well. One, who had occupied 52 acres. Imd mrde £315 from milk alone last year ; another, with 140 acres, had made £502 from milk. £67 from tho sale of cattla and jiij;s : a third, with B0 acres, had a yield of £463 from milk alone, from thirty-three cows. The milking was done by the tettleis and the-i? families. The Premier expressed sympathy with the deputation.
