A QUARTER'S TRADE. Some interesting facts and -figures lie buried in the returns of imports and exports of New Zealand for the quarter ended 31st December. The exports, for example, were valued at £4,288,823, as agairist £4,082,253 for the corresponding quarter of 1909; but, taking the twelve months, the position of what New Zealand bought and what she sold stands thus : 193.0. 1909. Exports (sold) ...£22,180.277 £19,661,996 Imports (bought) 17,050,604 15,674,719 Total trade ... £39,230.881 £35,336,715 Included in the above figures is specie imported : For 1910, £503,360 ; and for 1909, £857,257. The remainder is for things bought: wines, spirits, tobacco, motor cars, cutlery, drapery, dried fiuits — anything,/ in "fact, from a needle to an anchor. From the soil New Zealand wo-n and sold in the world's market, wool, coal, oysters, butter, cheese, bacon, fungus, meat, skins, potatoes, timber, cereals, silver, gum, sausage-skins, and other articles, to the value for the year of £22,152,541 if the specie sent away be subtracted from the grand total. New Zealand's customers dwell in places so far apart as Manila and Mexico. Belgium and Bolivia. The largest customer (as shown by the quarterly reiturns) is the United Kingdom. Them follow in their order Australia, iho United States. Germany, Canada, Tonga, Ceylo.ll, Fiji, Tahiti, and Samoa. The smallest, importers (chiefly through parcels post) are Holland, Persia, Now Guinea, Russia, and Italy, and a £10 note would amply cover the value of their trade. France, Austria-Hungary, Switzerland, and some other countries appear email importers, but they draw «p/yi London, the'a^urket for ;tb.e wpridj.
