At 9 a.m. the following forecast was issued lor the subsequent 24 hours:— Winds.— Moderate to strong easterly winds are probable northward of New Plymouth and Napier; south-easterly, strocg to gale, thence to Kaikoura and Farewell Spit, and a southerly gale is probable everywhere after about 20 nours. Barometer.— Fall slowly northward of New Plymouth and Napier, but rising everywhere after about 10 hours. Sea.— Heavy between East Cape and Kaikoura and in Cook and Foveaus Strait; probably increasing elsewhere. Tides.— Good on all the eastern coast; poor on the western coast, but increasing after 10 hours. Warning signals for south-easterly gales are exhibited at East Cape, Cape Campbell, Farewell Spit, and Stephen Island, but for southerly at Nugget Point and Centre Island, and at Cape Foulwind, Tiritiri, and Cape Maria Van Diemen at sunrise.
