HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

.VARIOUS WORKS. The Hutt Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (My. E. P. Bunny) presiding. Other members present were Councillors Baldwin, Roots, Haj'es, Pearce, Hawthorn, Macaskill. Advice was received from the Inspector of Police, that the question of hawking articles or goods might bo dealt with under a bylaw. It would, however, require special consideration to meet the caseß of hawkers who, while plying thoir calling, did not obstruct the traffic. According to the Mayor, the shopkeepers had a genuine grievance. The council resolved to ascertain from the City Council whether ice-cifeam vendors wore licensed, and, if so, to make local hawkers take out a license in the borough. Permission was granted to the Posb and Telegraph Department to remove the cables from their present position on the Hutt Bridge, and to lay them along the northern side of the footbridge. Tho engineer was instructed to report* upon a request by Dr. Hector that an open drain through property formerly owned by Mr. Frederick be diverted or a portion of it piped. Request was received from the Britannia Syndicate that the council take over l-lume-stroefc, in order to admit of the property being subdivided and transferred. Messrs. Bunny' and Ayson, referring to the same matter, pointed out that it waa the syndicate's intention to have _ the streets cleared, as soon as the drainage had been completed. A bond forwarded by the syndicate was accepted by the council, and it waa resolved that the engineer inspect the street and report. In connection with tho expense of making house-connoctions with the sewerage service, financial assistance was sought by a ratepayer. The request waa referred to tho Finance Committee, it being pointed out at tho same timo that tiie policy of the council was to make monetary advances tp, only those ratepayers actually in need of financial assistance. ,In tho Works Committee's report recommendations wore submitted to tho tollowing effect :— That tho council approach the ralopaycis for a further loan of £10,000 to finish the drainage works, ana to make certain additions, including tho works still to be done at Alicetown. —Held over. That tho engineer proceed with the laying of the drains in Hau-tana-square. — Decision deferred. That the drainage of Hume-strec-t, on the Britannia estate, bo proceeded with at onco, and tho owners charged with the cost. —Adopted. Re Mr. Grapes's report on motor 'buses, that the council ask Mr. Crrapes, or his partner, Mr. Riley, to attend a meeting of the council, and discuss certain points with thorn. It was also reported that "the water main had been laid along Market-stroet, and for about 24 chp.ms along the stop bank, making 30 chains in all. Bake/a dedication is now complete, with tho exception of a little straightening up. Tho Belmont Hill fence has been finished. Tarring footpaths in Alicetown is proceeding. Tho painting of Moiling Bridge commenced last week. The traffic bylaw of this bridge is frequently infringed, notwithstanding the fact that the bylaw iB now plainly exhibited at tho approach to tho bridge. One hundred and ninety-eight permits under the drainage and sanitary bylaws had been issued to date, and of" theso 177 wore in use. Ono connection had been made with tho gas main, and eleven with the water mains, making 691 water services to the present timo."
