During the week ended on Thursday many earth tremors were recorded in Sydney. Last Saturday the Melbourne seismograph recorded the severest tremor that had ever affected the instrument. CREDIT FONCIER SYSTEM. SUCCESS ACHIEVED IN VICTORIA. (Received December 3, 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. In moving the second reading of the Savings Bank Act Amending Bill in t.he State Assembly, the Treasurer (the Hon. W. A Watt) stated that the credit foneier system had more than justified itself. Of two and a-half millions advanced, only £100 was in default out of £158 represented by interest. The Bill proposes to extend the system in order to enable people to build their own homes. WORKING OF THE TELEPHONE. EFFECT OF THE TOLL SYSTEM. MELBOURNE, This Day. The departmental engineer has assured the Postmaster-General that if the telephonic flat "rate had been continued till the present time the service would have broken down. LARGE AREA OF FARMS. (Received December 3, 9.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Scottish Commissioners now on tour were astonished at the large area of farms in Australia. CAPITAL SITE TERRITORY. TRANSFER FROM STATE GOVERNMENT. .MELBOURNE, 2nd December The 'State Government has given the Federal Government ten square miles of territory at Jervois Bay, in connection with the capital site territory instead of the one square mile stipulated by the Act. A VETERAN SPEAKER. TWENTY-ONE YEARS' SERVICE. (Received December 3, 10.15 a.m.) ADELAIDE, This Day. Sir Jenkiu Coles has completed twen-ty-one years' service as Speaker of the South Australian Assembly . He has not missed a single sitting. Sir Jenkin has represented Light (now included in Wooroora), with the exception of one Parliament, since 1875." He was a member of various Ministries prior to i his appointment as Speaker in 1890. The honour of knighthood was conferred on him in 1894.
