«»' — "JAPAN DAY" CELEBRATION, (From Our Own Correspondent. J LONDON, 30th September. Japan's national holiday was observed at the Japan-British Exhibition on Saturday, when the number of visitors during the day reached the record figure of 480,000. During the afternoon there was a display of Japanese or daylight fireworks, and this was followed by a historical procession similar to that which was going through the streets of Tokyo. Large elaborately decorated caTs, ono of which bore the figures of seven Japanese gods, were preceded by a group of men, mounted and on foot, clad in armour of bygone periods of the Empire's history. One car, bearing an almond tree in blossom, was surrounded by a number of girls dressed in the style of the gay Genroku period, carrying rods of steel with jingling rings attached. The great Empress Jingoo was also reD resented. One car bore the dragon-like* effigy ot" Shoki, the god whose form is said to scare away misfortune. Following this came the Formosans, the hairy Ainu, the Japanese wrestlers, and a group of masked men &nd women carrying lanterns. The bands accompanying the procession played the National Anthem at the conclusion of the proceedings. In the evening the pageant was repeated, and the lakes and lagoons were illuminated with thousands of Japanese lanterns.
