KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL

WATER-POWER SCHEME REVIEWED. Tho fortnightly meeting of tho Karori Borough Council held last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr.. C. I. Dasent) and Councillors Spiers, Cathie, Wedde, Raine, Burn, Welling, Hildreth, and Warmsley. The support of the council was solicited by the Napier Chamber of Commerce towards a movement arising out of the State water-power proposals, for the obtaining of one comprehensive electrical power scheme for the whole district stretching between Gisborne, Wellington, and Wauganui. In enlarging on the potentialities of the scheme, the communication urged that the resources of Waikare Moana (with an area of six square miles, a maximum depth of 800 ft, and a fall of 1420 ft in 3^ miles) offered splendid facilities for the development of electrical energy, The lake, it was held, was capable of producing, roughly speaking, 134,000 horsepower. One comprehensive scheme could be installed at a smaller cost to each district than would be involved by a number of minor schemes. In remarking that it was easily manifeet that the Government's scheme was going to cost an enormous sum of money, the Mayor said that they would no doubt live to see the day when current would be obtainable at cheap rates for the, development of the country's and local bodies' enterprise!?. Th? council resolved, on Mr. Dasent's motion, to assure the chamber that it would do all that lay in its power to further the claims of a comprehensive scheme. An application of the Karon Athletic Club to hold a sports meeting on the Recreation Ground on 23rd November was favourably entertained.
