Mr. S. S. Cameron, M.R.C.V.S., of the Victorian Government Department of Agriculture, read a paper recently at the Chamber of Agriculture Convention, in Ballarat on the failure of Victorian horsebreeders to hold their own against those of New Zealand. He did not, he said, believe that climate had anything to do with it, but attributed the preference given to New Zealand-bred horses partly to fashion, partly to faulty rearing methods, and partly to haphazard or unscientific breeding. As regards rearing methods, Australian breeders were too inclined to depend on "natural" rearing in the paddock, without any help from shelter or hand-Feed-ing. With draught horses there had been indiscriminate and unenlightened crossing in' the breeding of horses for stud purposes. Messrs. J. C. Rimmer (Liverpool) and C.
