MAIL SERVICES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I thank you for your enquiries re the proposed mail service. It must be at once admitted that it is impossible to make the new service alternate with the Vancouver service at both ends, for although the running time is the same on the northward run (22 days), mails from Vancouver take 31 days to reach Wellington via Sydney. Nevertheless, the suggested arrangements could be improved upon. Being interested in correspondence with America, I should like to point out that the mails via Vancouver and 'Frisco, under the proposed arrangement, will arrive in Wellington and arrive at Vancouver within three or four days of each other, just as they wijl depart from Auckland within three or four days of each other. Moreover, 22nd October is the date on which the Mokoia would have sailed from Wellington in continuation of the old fi.Te.weekly service. If the steamers are to leave 'Frisco twelve days after the Vancouver mail, the time-table arranged may be approximately drawn up. I propose to give the fixed Vancouver time-table, and I have, also drawn up a suggested timetable, which would give maximum intervals between American mails at both ends, simply to show that longer intervals could be provided even if steamers ran one or two doys later than suggested, so as to make a close connection at 'Frisco. Allowing for the fact that 'Frisco time is one day behind New Zealand time, they would be as follows :—: — A. — Time-table as Arranged. Outwards. dep.— Oct. 21, Oct. 25, Nov. 18, Nov. 22. 'Frisco, arr. — Nov. 12, Dec. 10. .Vancouver, arr. — Nov. 16, Dec. 15. Inwards. Vancouver, dep. — Nov. 4, Dec. 2. 'Frisco, dep. — Nov. 16, Dec. 14. [Wellington, arr. — Dec. 5, Dec. 9, Jan. 2, Jan. 6. B. — Time-table Suggested. Outwards. dep. — Oct. 25, Nov. 1, Nov. 22, Nov. 29. 'Frisco, dep.— Nov. 23, Dec. 21. Vancouver, arr. — Nov. 16, Dec. 15. Inwards. Vancouver, dep. — Nov. 4, Dec. 2. ■'Frisco, dep.— Nov. 26, Dec. 24. Wellington, arr.— Dec. 5, Dec. 19, Jan. 2, Jan. 16. *The dates are for mails. Steamer leaves Auckland next day. Notes.— (A) gives a longer interval between departures from America, but that is the only interval of more than foui' days between mails. <B) gives seven days between departures from Wellington and between'arrivals at an American port, six days between departures from Ar ~'ca and 14 days between arrivals at ilington. This gives the maximum number of intervals at both ends, 34 days, while A gives only 24 days altogether. — I am, etc., J-H-Wellington, Bth September, 1910.
