CALVE.

The announcement by Messrs. J. and N. Tait that Wellington music lovers will have two more opportunities of bearing that brilliant and versatile singer and actress, Madame Calve, has been received with the greatest interest. The enthusiasm which marked the success of the first concert at the Town Hall when the auditorium was filled to its utmost extent is a happy augury that the two concerts to be given in the Opera House on Saturday and Tuesday evenings, 17th and 20th September, will meet with similar success. The sensation which the duet from "Cavalleria Rusticana" created gives in some measure an indication to what artistic heights Calve and Signor Gasparri can rise. It is announced that these two artists will give the duet from the second act of "Carmen" in costume, with appropriate scenery, next Saturday evening. Calves fascinating interpretation of the "Habanera" air gives only a hint of what she is capable of in the great duet from the opera. As regards the "Carmen" number, both Calve and Signor Gasparri, by appearing in costume, and with suitable scenery, will, it is stated, give the. scene more in accordance with what is demanded than could possibly be conveyed on the bare concert platform. In Christchurch this was apparent, where the concerts were given in the Theatre Royal. At the conclusion of the Wellington season the company will leave for Sydney, where the eleven concerts already given have not been sufficient to meet the demand of the music-loving portion of that community. The box plans for the Wellington concerts will be opened at the Dresden on Monday morning, and the management advises early booking, as a heavy demand for reserved seats has set in from the country districts.
