HOCKEY

(By "Shinty.") A quiet day, generally was spent by Wellington hockey players of both sexes last Saturday. The men's senior and ' junioc club championships are finished, and some of the third-class fixtures went by default. In this competition Government Insurance have a clear lead. All matches under the Wellington Ladies' Hockey Association were postponed, owing to the two teams of feminine representatives being absent at the Nelson tournament. . In some circles it was considered a mistake was being made in not arranging a practice game for the men's representative team which met Auckland to-day, but the powers that he | were of the opinion that the eleven, having experienced a heavy season, would take the field in a fresher condition after a fortnight's rest. It eer-' tainly would have been advisable, however, for the team to have undergone some gentle form of exreise, especially as an alteration had been made in the forward line, which might have affected the harmony of that rank. The only remaining challenge for the Shield is that of Nelson. The match has been set down for decision on the 24th September. Taranaki's challenge has been withdrawn. Of course, tho match with Nelson won't materialise if Auckland capture the Shield to-day. Enquiries for a match wiCh Wellington's representatives have been made by South Canterbury, who, however, make certain stipulations. The southernars ask for a date, and it is probable that the local association will make an unconditional offer of next Saturday or Ist October. The association has also been asked to play an exhibition game on the Athletic Park on ths Bth October in connection with the All Sports Display for raising of funds for the Boys' Institute. The promoters of the scheme desire the association to fill 30 minutes of the programme. Canterbury have sent a touring team to Dunedin and Inv-ercargill to play Otago - and Southland to-day and next Wednesday^ respectively. It is stated that Caiitobury's team is not thoroughly representative, as some players were unable to make the trip. The following alterations appear in the English laws of the game for 191011 :— Rule 4, goals, posts, etc : '"• • • • The posts shall be two inches broad and not more than three inches in depth, and the crossbars shall have rectangular edges. . . ." Rule 7, sticks : ". . . Tho extremity of the stick must not be cut square or pointed, but must have rounded edges." Note to penalty for. Rule 7 : "Surgical binding on the head of the stick is allowed subject to ils not preventing the head passing through a 2in ring." Rule 11, offside-; " . . He may not play the ball nor in any way interfere with any other player, etc. . . ." Rule 15, penalty paragraph 1_: ". . . the-uni.-

pire shall order the hit to be taken again, except as specially provided for m this rule." Rule 16, penalty bully : ". . . . If during the progress of a penalty bully the ball goes over any part of the goal line other than that between the goal-posts off the stick or person of the offender the penalty bully shall be taken again. If the ball goes over the goal-line between the goalposts off the stick or person of the offender, a penalty goal shall be awarded to the attacking team . . ." Rule 19, corner, penalty : "If the player to whom the corner is hib out, without attempting to stop the ball, takes a flying hit at goal, the umpire shall award free hit to the defending team."
